Our Founder’s Thoughts on the Book
Throughout my reading of Good to Great, by Jim Collins, I found myself reflecting on my own company quite a bit. I just created Flymake LLC about 6 months ago, and it’s been challenging to transition into the self-managed, self-propelled, practical proceedings of running my own company while doing all the ground work for it. Reading about ‘the greats’ of those leading companies really encouraged me. The stories and case studies provided in the book served as wonderful reminders that success doesn’t just happen overnight. Learning about the people who transformed their own companies into flourishing organizations was exactly what I needed to be recharged in the midst of my own processes, where it’s easy to lose the forest surrounded by all those trees.
Good to Great also helped me recognize the connections between the “visioning” big-picture and the “grind wheel” daily work. It helped me see how both modes of operating are not only important, but also mutually supportive. This sounds obvious, when it’s put into words, but recognizing that simple concept was new for me.
So, in examining my own approach to these two realms, I was inspired to clarify where I want my company to focus, and how we will do that. I ended up with more written down than I expected. Part manifesto and part workflow organizer, I’m happy to share a few of my first focused strategic thoughts about Flymake as my response to this book.
What We Do (Focus)
Simply put: we are graphic designers and visual art makers.
We make you think. We make you look good. We leave you inspired and equipped.
Why We Do It (Vision)
Flymake’s vision is simple. We want to inspire people to dream and imagine what is possible.
“Once you stop dreaming, you start dying.” -Bill Johnson
It doesn’t matter who you are. To imagine and see possibility with hope in your eyes is vital for life. We want to encourage you in that journey. Clear visual branding can speak to what is possible and shed light on where you’re going. A logo or website can (and should) be just as inspirational as a fine painting or a beautiful dance.
How We Do (Project Workflow)
Whether you’re commissioning a painting or revising your company’s visual identity, we have specific processes in place that help us find the perfect visual solution for your needs. (This will be released soon, in our upcoming info-packet… So check back in the next week.)
Our Hedgehog Concept (Where We’re Going)
Communicating with clients to analyze their organization’s goals and create recognizable visual campaigns. We brainstorm with our clients on creative ways to to boost brand recognition that will achieve their unique vision. We specialize in finding the gold in a client’s company, then describing it visually. The end goal is to clearly show the strengths and potential of their organization to anyone who comes into contact with their visual identity.
Creative Layouts and Designs:
We create smart designs that blend technology and communication. Our solutions will become much more than just graphic design, but together, we will create something new that brings our clients’ organizations practical, measurable results. FlyMake is into more than just “making logos” or “developing websites” but we love creating a holistic, unified identity that give fresh insight to an organization’s purpose, product, or group. From beginning concept, to finished pieces, we want to leave clients encouraged and help their dreams thrive!
Visual Art and Declarative Expression:
Creating something beautiful that not only encourages, but also enlightens and provokes more healthy questions. Our handmade paintings and artwork function as conceptual and spiritual catalysts. Our fine art is meant to inspire viewers to change the way they think. Some ideas are better expressed without words or statistics, and art is the perfect medium to bring to light that which is often left unseen.
These customized declarations can speak to a number of different needs, but the goal of these pieces is always to bring about fresh understanding and positive change in anyone who sees the piece. This includes (but is not limited to) the following :
- Declaring a change or a new approach to a visible situation.
- Bringing mental and/or emotional and/or physical healing.
- Shifting the atmosphere and/or mindsets to bring life. (For a family, group, person, place, etc.)
- Encouraging viewers to see the positive, right where they are.
- Describing what is happening in unseen realms.
- Shed light on questions or uncertainty people may have about a specific topic.
Teaching People to Think Visually:
Whether it’s through our online training courses, or hands-on workshops, FlyMake is passionate about empowering people to communicate well through visual expression. Visual art and design is a wonderful tool for interacting with God and with others that is not only beautiful, but also therapeutic in nature. When we learn to process through obstacles, and solve problems creatively, we gain a priceless understanding of the world around us. The goal of FlyMake’s training and equipping is three-fold:
- Give practical techniques and skills that equip participants to express their vision successfully.
- Instill a deep heart-connection to the appreciation of art and the beauty that is to be found.
- Connect and communicate with God, and one’s own thoughts, in an imaginative way.
What excites you about where you’re going? How do you see yourself improving and growing in the next few years?
